Band & Percussion
Instruction is given by either the band director, the assistant, or a high-level student
Beginning Percussion
Beginning Percussion is designed for students who have little or no prior musical experience. This class is designed to build foundational rhythm, coordination, and technique across a variety of surfaces and tools.
This class is offered at Village Bible Church on Wednesdays
Beginning Band
Beginning Band is designed for students who have little or no prior musical experience. Children can choose to play a variety of instruments: including flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone. Note by note, they learn how to read music and play while listening and blending with the others in the band. Basic theory is taught in a fun-filled and welcoming atmosphere.
Intermediate Band
Intermediate Band is a band for students who have completed beginning band. Students will continue on the same instrument they learned in Beginning Band. Students will continue to build on the skills that they learned in Beginning Band.
Advanced Band - Alpha Winds
The Alpha Winds is the advanced ensemble is an advanced level band for students who have completed beginning and intermediate band. Basic requirements to be in this level include the ability to play several scales on a wind instrument and be proficient in reading music. The Alpha Winds is an ensemble of winds and rhythm that tackles more challenging music which includes contemporary, classical and jazz pieces.
Strings
Strings 1
No prior knowledge needed. Materials: Instrument, Essential Elements Book 1.
You will learn all the basics from how to hold your instrument properly to how to read music and count rhythm. Very young children should attend with a parent’s help (please contact the teacher before registering if your child is under 8 years old).
Strings 2
Complete Level 1. Materials: Instrument, Essential Elements Book 1.
Required skills: How to properly hold your instrument; Read music on the D and A strings; Know the notes in the D scale; Count simple rhythms.
Strings 3
Pass Level 2. Materials: Instrument, Essential Elements Book 2.
Required skills: Proficient in reading all notes in first position on all strings; Developing intonation; Proficient in the keys of D, G, and C major; Use of simple bowing techniques, rhythms, and articulations.
Strings 4
Pass Level 3. Materials: Instrument, Essential Technique Book 3.
Required skills: Competent intonation; Proficient in major keys from B flat to A major; Understands major scale patterns; Use of a variety of bowing techniques, more challenging rhythms, and articulations; Able to follow the conductor and blend with the ensemble.
Orchestra
Students who take private lessons or have passed Level 4 satisfactorily may enroll in Orchestra without taking Level 2, 3, or 4
Children's Music and Choir
Our Children’s Choir trains young musicians not just to sing, but to read music, vocalize properly, practice ear training, site sing, and most of all to have fun thrilling audiences with great music... ultimately enriching their lives.
Music Fundamentals
For​ the youngest of aspiring musicians, Music Fundamentals provides fun, easy and educational experiences to introduce children to the world of music. Simple theory and technique are taught as they begin to read music and explore a variety of instruments in a small class environment.
Beginning/Intermediate - Kingdom Singers
Our Kingdom singers ensemble is designed for young students who love to sing. In a fun and engaging setting students will learn about their speaking and singing voices, work on pitch matching with unison melodies, how to blend, and follow a conductor. This choir is also preparation for singing with our Magnum Singers.
Advanced - Magnum Speakers
Our Magnum singers are an audition only choir where students will learn how to listen to each other, read vocal scores with repertoire sung in three and four part harmonies. We also work on site reading and vocalization. Students will explore diverse repertoire from around the world.

Marching Arts
Sound Waves Home School Marching Band
The award winning Sound Waves Homeschool Marching Band is the west coast’s only homeschool marching band. The members range in age from elementary grades to seniors in high school. They learn the art of playing while marching in formation and performing drill. The Sound Waves march in parades and field show competitions including the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival, Seal Beach Christmas Parade, Lompoc Flower Festival, a 4th of July Parade, and the California State Band Championships.
There is an additional fee for this class/activity.
Drumline
The OCMA Independent Drumline is part of OCMA Marching Arts. This drumline is comprised of drummers and musicians who are focused on putting together an exciting indoor percussion spectacular. In competition with other high schools, OCMA Independent consistently places in the top 10 of its field.
Indoor Drumline is a combination of a marching battery of drums and a wide variety of stationary pit instruments.
